Lying awake at 3 am in the morning thinking “God tomorrow’s swim is going to be going to be painful”. I couldn’t help that thought from going through my head which was “I got to bed too late” and now I wan in the predicament of not getting much sleep. I tossed and turned for a little while and then discovered that it was now only 3:30 am.

After tossing and turning for a little while I was woken by my alarm going off at 5:40 I am. I was still going to go training. I’ve made a commitment and I’ve got to stick to it. So I threw off the sheep blanket and got out of bed. I suppose the upside is I was prepared. I had my bag packed ready to go, I through on a change of clothes and walked out the door, jump in the car and off I went.

Still a little late, but better.

Arriving at the pool I found that some of my adult squad ready to go. I normally coach them on Monday them mornings. But they forget what week they started back and were ready to go at 6:05 am. I had to explain that their training sessions actually didn’t start until next Monday and that I was just here doing my own training thing. They’re pretty happy with that and they just jumped in the water and did their own thing too. I wrote my program up on the whiteboard, walk over to the edge of the pool. Again I sat down with my feet in the water, however this time I didn’t procrastinate too long. I slipped into the water and off I went on my 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 100 Breaststroke kick warm-up.

Not too bad.

After my 300metres, then I moved into the rest of the program. To be honest, my 200 didn’t feel too bad. I did notice the other day on my first training session that my technique felt a little bit sloppy so I decided to work on some chicken wing freestyle drills. Just to try and tidy things up a little bit although I think the fitness component is also going to have to pick up for me to improve. These 50s were not too much of a struggle. There were 10 of them, but they were only on the minute 30.

Looking back over the session now, it didn’t feel the way it did previously when I’ve trained a few years ago. I was working hard but I was also feeling relaxed. Which, as I think of it now is a little unsettling. I have two years of work in front of me but it’s only just session 2. Next thing was 6 x 50 m backstroke pulls, these were not too bad. They’re only 20 seconds rest between each one so I could do these pretty comfortably. The only problem was that because I haven’t done backstroke in so long, I was drowning myself in the last 10 m. But after coughing and spluttering a fair bit for the last two or three I kept going to make sure I finished the set-off.

My old foe

Breaststroke, I’m not a real fan of breaststroke and never have been. I’ve never been really good at it so I’ve never really worked hard at it. This morning I just had an easy 100 breaststroke just to try and get back into the rhythm of it. But by the time I knew it, I had done twice the amount. I ended up with a 200m breaststroke and although it needs some work it felt not bad.

Then came 200m freestyle kick at a moderate pace which was ok. I’ve been suffering from gout in my big toe which has caused me to limp, but self-inflicted so no sympathy. Now about 2 hours later my toe is feeling pretty good, little sore but nothing I can’t handle. I finished off the rest of the program hopped out dried myself off. Just as I did an old swim student who had to move to another school was about to hop in. I was really happy to hear that he was enjoying his school and that he was succeeding in his academics. He didn’t seem over stressed about his studies and sounded like he was just enjoying his schooling.

2 Down.

That was today’s session all up I actually liked it which is a bit weird considering. When I quit swimming training the last time I was really happy to get out of the pool. However now I really can’t wait to get fitter so every now and then I can swim with some of my swim students. If you have any questions or you’d like to chat with me more about my sessions then please send me a message on Facebook or Instagram.

Have a great day and I hope you like the story so far.
